RUDN students of mathematics bring silver from the OMOUS-2023 Olympiad in Ashgabat

April 24–28, the III Open Mathematical Olympiad for University Students (OMOUS-2023) was held in Turkmenistan. 282 students from 9 countries competed in the team and individual competitions. Mathematicians from RUDN brought silver to Moscow.

The geography of participants in the OMOUS-2023 Olympiad covered 9 countries: Azerbaijan, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The tournament was held on the basis of the International University for the Humanities and Development. Turkmen and English became the official languages of the Olympiad.

RUDN University team won a II degree diploma:

  • Alexander Kirilenko, team captain (II degree diploma in the individual competition);
  • Seraphim Vinogrodsky (II degree diploma in the individual competition);
  • Alexander Korotkov (III degree diploma in the individual competition);
  • Agata Schebletsova (commendation in the individual competition).

Supervisor — Daria Apushkinskaya, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor of Nikolsky Mathematical Institute, RUDN.

Day 1 — Opening Ceremony and Individual competitions

The Olympiad started with the acquaintance with Esen Aydogdyev, Rector of the International University for the Humanities and Development, as well as gifts to participants — the Turkmen tahya, national skullcaps.

In the individual competitions, the participants were divided into two categories: students specializing in mathematics and computer science, and students of other areas of study at universities. Participants were given 6 math problems and 240 minutes (4 hours) to solve them.

Day 2 — team competition and excursion to Nisa

More than 50 teams, consisting of maximum 4 students each, participated in the group competition, regardless of their specialization. The teams were given 10 problems and two hours (120 minutes) to solve them.

On the same day, foreign participants visited the Nisa monumental complex, 18 kilometers northwest of Ashgabat. This is one of the oldest places in Turkmenistan, one of the first capitals of the Parthian Empire (III century BC — III century AD). In 2007, this historical complex was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Especially interesting were the facts about the Parthian fortresses of Nisa.

Day 3 – excursions and food festival

April 26, the works of participants in the Open Mathematical Olympiad of university students were evaluated. The participants visited the sights of the city of Ashgabat: the State Museum of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan and the National Carpet Museum of Turkmenistan. The guests were invited to the national food festival on the campus of the International University for the Humanities and Development. The evening ended with folk songs and dances.

Day 4 — first results and appeals

April 27, preliminary results were announced. On the same day there was an appeal. The RUDN University team fought for every point — they explained to the Turkmen teachers their steps in solving the problems.

Day 5 — results, awards and closing

The final results, awarding and closing of the Olympiad took place on April 28. RUDN University got a II degree diploma in team competitions and a series of individual victories!

“The Olympiad was held at a high level. Special thanks to the organizers for the amazing hospitality!” said Daria Apushkinskaya, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor of Nikolsky Mathematical Institute, RUDN.
