RUDN University architects win the competition “Timeless. A moment of silence”
RUDN University was represented by students of “Architecture”:
- Maxim Savchenko, 2nd year;
- Zhanna Pavelieva, 2nd year;
- Sofia Schweitzer, 1st year.
RUDN architects presented two projects. The work “Waiting Lights”, made in the form of an overlaid facade with lanterns, took the 1st place. The project “Victims” in the form of a bronze cube, made up of the shoes of the dead people, got the 2nd place.
The finalists in the nomination “Small Memorial Architectural Form” were also students of the Engineering Academy: Bui Nguyen Hoai Chang, Bui Shuen Quyn Chang, Anastasia Lyapicheva and Tatyana Ageeva.
“We were inspired by the poem ‘Muscovites’ and the story of apartment building No. 10 in Mokhovaya Street for the project ‘Waiting Lights’. During the Great Patriotic War, it was hit by a bomb that destroyed the central part of the building. But they decided not to demolish or restore it, leaving it divided into two parts, showing the consequences of the war,” says Maxim Savchenko, 2nd- year student.
“Victims” symbolizes the souls of men, women, children and the elderly who died in concentration camps. We were shocked by the fact that after the murder, only mountains of clothes remained from people. Shoes leave traces on the ground — the war leaves traces in the souls and in the memory of people," says Zhanna Pavelyeva, 2nd- year student.
“The hardest part of the job is the idea. To find it, it was necessary to study historical materials and analyze existing architectural monuments dedicated to the war. Our projects are a memory of the innocent victims of the war,” says Sophia Schweitzer, 1st- year student.
The winners of the competition were awarded at the Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Hill. 100 winning projects and laureates of the competition were presented at the final exhibition.
Students thank their teachers who helped them prepare for the contest: Oleg Bik, Sergey Chertkov and Yegor Orlov.
