Faculty Description
The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences is one of the oldest faculties of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. The faculty was founded in 1961.
The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences of RUDN University is a "good school of life" (V.M. Filippov, Rector of RUDN University), where students’ special systemic thinking is formed along with scientific knowledge. This combination allows graduates of this faculty to make a career in science, to be successful in business, entrepreneurship, politics, in the field of information technologies.
The faculty consists of 7 departments, 2 scientific and 2 scientific-educational institutes: S.M. Nikol’skii Mathematical Institute and Research Institute of Physics & Technology (RIPT). At the faculty there are 4 thesis councils for defending PhD and doctoral theses.
The faculty trains more than 1,500 students and postgraduate students in 8 field of study:
- Mathematics
- Applied Mathematics and Informatics
- Mathematics and Computer Sciences
- Fundamental Informatics and Information Technologies
- Applied Informatics
- Business Informatics
- Physics
- Chemistry
The faculty conducts training both in Russian and in English. In particular, there are three master's programmes in English: "Theoretical and Mathematical Physics" (Research Institute of Physics & Technology), "Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds" (Department of Organic Chemistry), "Functional Methods in Differential Equations and Interdisciplinary Researches" (S.M. Nikol’skii Mathematical Institute).
Master's programmes in Chemistry and Fundamental Informatics and Information Technologies have been internationally accredited by the Spanish agency DEVA-AAC, which is part of the European Quality Assurance Register (EQAR).
The faculty implements joint educational programmes with foreign universities. The programme "Pharmaceutical Analysis in the Production and Quality Control of Medicines" is implemented jointly with the Yerevan State University, the exchange education programme – jointly with the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.
In 40 laboratories of the faculty, students solve differential equations, study mathematical and computer modeling, function spaces, IT systems and networks, develop the theory of extremum problems and optimal control. Students study the problems of artificial intelligence, create new materials and biologically active substances, energy-saving technologies and environmentally friendly energy, conduct research in the field of electromagnetic radiation and the application of information technologies in natural sciences.
Students of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences are united in science clubs and teams, participate in scientific and professional competitions and olympiads, where they present their results of research and development. Students have the opportunity to participate in scholarship programs of foreign organizations, in particular, DAAD (Germany), N+I (France) and ERASMUS (EEU).
At the faculty great importance is attached to internships. Students undertake internships at the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute", A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INEOS RAS), A.V. Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the international airport "Domodedovo".
Partners of the faculty in the field of education and science: University Saskatchewan (Canada), Gumilev ENU (Kazakhstan), G.V. Leibniz Hannover University (Germany), University of Porto (Portugal), Tampere University of Technology (Finland), Free University of Berlin, Heidelberg University (Germany), Chemistry Institute of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Institute of Experimental Physics (Slovakia).
Cooperation with foreign universities is an opportunity for students to study upon academic exchange programmes and conduct joint scientific research with foreign colleagues.
Science at the faculty is a special priority. Two scientific and two academic institutions have been established to conduct research in breakthrough areas of science:
- Joint Research Institute of Chemistry. The task set before the scientists of the Institute is to develop methods for obtaining natural compounds and their analogues to create new biologically active substances that will help solve the problems of many diseases of mankind.
- Nikol'skii Mathematical Institute. The Institute conducts interdisciplinary research, based on sections of functional analysis and differential equations with applications to variational problems, optimal control, nonlinear problems of mathematical physics and modeling.
- Applied Mathematics & Communications Technology Institute. The Institute was established to solve practical problems in the field of Internet of things, fifth generation wireless networks (5G) and their applications. In the Institute's laboratories, joint research is conducted by mathematicians and engineers from Russia, the USA, Switzerland, Finland and the Czech Republic.
- Research Institute of Physics & Technology. The Institute conducts research in the field of plasma dynamics, wave and radiative processes, nano- and plasma technologies. The research results are aimed at the development and creation of innovative energy sources.

Well-known scientists, successful practitioners regularly give classes at the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Professors of the leading universities of the world share their experience and knowledge with students of RUDN University at open lectures and master classes. Representatives of enterprises and business organizations tell students about the intricacies of the profession. A space bridge with foreign colleagues and potential partners is a new tradition dictated by the time.
