Profession

Pathologies of the nervous system have been known dating ancient times. It was not until the middle of the XIX century that there has been accumulation of empirical knowledge about the nervous system and its diseases. It is on this basis that the creation and subsequent development of a branch of science called neurology was formulated.
The Inception of Neurology as an independent clinical discipline is considered to be in 1860, when the first neurological department in the world was opened in the city of Salpetriere near Paris, France, at the newly built medical faculty of the University of Paris by the 36-year-old doctor Jean Martin Charcot (1824-1893). Consequently, a fully independent clinical department of nervous diseases was created at the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris. Apart from a neurology inpatient hospital wards and the outpatient clinic, anatomical, pathophysiological laboratories, anatomical- physiological museum, library, neuro-ophthalmological, and other auxiliary services were created.

Educational Process

Over the 2 years course of study, residents acquire knowledge of; how to diagnose neurological pathologies, perform neurological examination, neuropsychological studies, theoretical aspects of diseases, interpretation of instrumental- laboratory methods of examination and rehabilitation processes in various forms of neurological pathologies.

Practice

Clinical rotations take place in neurological clinics and general departments of designated hospitals under the supervision of departmental heads and professors.

Career

The importance of neurology as a profession cannot be emphasized enough. Graduating neurology specialists readily find work in public, private clinics and hospitals. The career of any doctor depends on successful practice and obtaining experience. Having gained experience, a neurologist can later become the head of the neurological department, and head physician.
