The founder of surgery is considered to be Hippocrates, who wrote a whole treatise, for the first time mentioning septic complications, described the treatment of boils and fractures. It should be noted that many modern doctors do not agree with such a prioritization, since the origin of this profession is indicated by references in ancient written sources about craniotomy in Ancient Egypt, information about the first instruments invention in India and Avicenna's works on human anatomical structure.

The development of science made it possible to carry out the most complex interventions that require knowledge and the ability to handle high-precision technology.


Educational Process

The resident learns to master methods and techniques of performing surgical interventions, to have medical and general biological knowledge, to determine the most effective methods of treating the patients. The educational process consists of regular practical classes at the bases of city hospitals and regional centres. The educational programme includes lectures for residents given by outstanding specialists.


Practice

The practical work of the resident consists of assistance in surgical operations, participation in consultations and scientific conferences, work in a clinic, keeping medical records, performing medical and diagnostic manipulations. The resident training is directly related to his curators and fully corresponds to the work of a specialist doctor.


Career

Upon completion of training, the graduate receives a surgeon certificate and has the opportunity of employment in specialized healthcare institutions, multidisciplinary medical institutions, which have specialized medical diagnostic departments of surgery, city hospitals, and higher educational institutions in their structure. Surgeons are often employed by medical centres attached to large companies, childcare and educational institutions, industrial enterprises and other organizations of various levels. The surgeon can conduct scientific activities, teach students in higher education institutions or training centres.
