Nikolsky Mathematical Institute

Foundation date: 2018. The Institute is formed by combining the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Function Theory, the Department of Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization, the Department of Applied Mathematics.

Director of the Institute – Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Aleksandr Leonidovich Skubachevskiy.

The Institute trains students in the fields of study "Mathematics", "Applied Mathematics and Informatics" and postgraduate students in the field of study "Mathematics and Mechanics".

The scientists of the Institute and the external experts involved form a scientific school and conduct research on the topical problems of mathematical science.

The Institute holds the International Conference on Differential and Functional-Differential Equations (DFDE) in cooperation with V.A. Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. The conference is held regularly and attracts the attention of scientists from all over the world. Students, postgraduate students and teachers make working trips and undertake internships at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin (Germany).

The Institute publishes a journal "Modern Mathematics. Fundamental directions" included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission. The journal is published in Russian and English.

Research Institute of Physics and Technology

Foundation date: 2017. The Institute is formed by combining the departments of applied physics, theoretical physics and mechanics.

Director of the Institute – Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Ilgisonis Viktor Igorevich.

The Institute trains bachelors in the field of study "Physics", masters in the field of study "Physics" under programmes "Fundamental and Applied Physics", "Theoretical and Mathematical Physics", a double degree programme with the University of Saskatchewan (Canada). In addition, the Institute trains postgraduate students in the field of study "Physics and Astronomy".

The staff of the Institute includes highly qualified specialists in the field of theoretical and experimental plasma physics, radiophysics, optoelectronics, mathematical modeling and informatics, mechanics, astrophysics, biophysics, etc. They cooperate with international companies, in particular, with the corporation “National Instruments”, a well-known developer in the field of data collection and software.

Students graduate from the Institute as experts in the field of experimental and theoretical physics, physical and applied electronics, specialists in education, high-tech industries and in the sphere of management. For classes and research, students are provided with training and research laboratories equipped with modern equipment. Students are also engaged in scientific-practical activities in leading research institutes (the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, the A.M. Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, etc.)

Students of the Institute actively participate in works on scientific grants, in projects of international cooperation and study abroad.

Department of Applied Informatics and Probability Theory

Foundation date: 2014. The department is formed by the merger of the Department of Telecommunication Systems and the Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics.

The department trains bachelors in the field of study: "Mathematics and Computer Science", "Fundamental Informatics and Information Technologies", "Applied Mathematics and Informatics", "Business Informatics", "Applied Informatics". Master's degree programmes of the department: "Management of Infocommunications and Intellectual Systems", "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics". The department also trains postgraduate students in the fields of study: "Computer and Information Sciences", "Informatics and Computer Science".

The educational process and scientific research are conducted in well-equipped multimedia classrooms, scientific-educational laboratories and computer classrooms.

The area of expertise of the Department includes 4G and 5G generation networks, LTE, SDN networks, cloud computing, big data systems; infocommunications, data models and formal languages for describing business processes; mathematical, information, simulation models of systems and processes; software and information support, etc.

Teachers, postgraduate students and students of the department successfully implement several grants of the RFBR, a state contract within the framework of the Federal Targeted Programme "Scientific and Scientific-Pedagogical Staff of Innovative Russia". The staff performs research work on the tasks of the Ministry of Education and Science, fulfills contracts on applied sections of mathematical and computer modeling.

Department of Information Technologies

Date of foundation: 1996.

Acting Head of the Department – PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Chukarin Aleksey Valerievich.

The department trains bachelors and masters in the fields of study: "Applied Informatics", "Business Informatics", "Fundamental Informatics and Information Technologies", "Applied Mathematics and Informatics".

The key area of the department's research includes the solution of problems in the field of artificial intelligence. The department conducts research in the field of intelligent dynamic systems, methods and means of intelligent text search, modeling of purposeful behaviour, robot control. The research is directed by the President of the Russian Association of Artificial Intelligence G.S. Osipov and Vice-President of the Association V.L. Stefanyuk.

Another important area of research is intelligent planning and solving the problems of control of robotic vehicles.

The department conducts research in the field of distributed high-performance computations, image recognition and intelligent control.

The department in cooperation with the educational center “Applied Data Science” organizes open free training courses on machine learning and data processing "Data Mining in Action".

Department of Inorganic Chemistry

Foundation date: 1961

The department trains bachelors in the field of study "Chemistry", master students in the field of study "Fundamental and Applied Chemistry", postgraduate students in the field of study "Inorganic Chemistry". The department also teaches the disciplines "Inorganic Chemistry" and "Analytical Chemistry" to the students of the field of study "Pharmacy" of the Medical Institute.

The department conducts scientific research in the field of coordination chemistry of platinum metals, solid state chemistry, chemistry of organo-element compounds, physical methods of studying substances and materials.

The students of the department undertake internships at the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" and in the Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Students, who are keen on science, may join scientific research clubs "Solid State Chemistry" and "Chemistry of Platinum Metals". Students present the results of their research and experiments at internal seminars and at external competition venues.

Department of Organic Chemistry

Foundation date: 1961

The department trains bachelors in the field of study "Chemistry", master students in the field of study "Fundamental and Applied Chemistry" (in Russian and English), postgraduate students in the field of study "Chemical Sciences".

The scientific work of the department is primarily connected with the development of synthesis methods and the study of chemical and biological properties of original nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. All teachers of the department perform scientific work and share their knowledge and experience with students.

The results of the department’s scientific activities are reflected in 750 scientific publications and in more than 60 patents. The obtained scientific information is fundamental and has no analogues in literature. It is published mainly in leading foreign and Russian journals, which are abstracted in WoS and Scopus databases. The research team of the department has great authority among chemists-heterocyclists in Russia and abroad. The scientific work of the department is supported by grants from the RFBR, the President of the Russian Federation, by the state task of the Ministry of Education and Science.

The department plays a leading role in organizing and holding the International Scientific Conference "Advances in Synthesis and Complexing".

At the department there is a scientific research club "Organic Synthesis". Students gain practical experience during professional internships at major enterprises of the chemical industry.

Department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry

Foundation date: 1962.

The department trains bachelors and master students of the fields of study "Chemistry", "Fundamental and Applied Chemistry". It teaches the discipline “Physical Chemistry” to students in the fields of study: “Pharmacy”, “Agronomy”, “Veterinary Medicine”, “Veterinary Sanitary Examination”, “Ecology and Nature Management”, “Energy and Resource Saving Processes in Chemical Technology”, “Petrochemicals and Biotechnology”, “Applied Geology", "Design and Technological Support of Machine-Building Productions", "Nanoengineering ". The department also trains postgraduate students of the field of study "Chemical Sciences" (profile "Physical Chemistry"; in Russian) and "Physical Chemistry of Adsorption and Catalysis" (in English).

Directions of scientific activity: hydrogen purification membranes and membrane catalysts; creation of highly efficient and selective catalysts and catalytic systems of hydrogenation and oxidation processes; research and modeling of catalysis and adsorption processes; computer simulation of surface processes on membrane catalysts; chemistry and technology of polymeric sorbents and hybrid materials; environmental safety and environmental protection. The results of the department's research were presented in Japan, the USA, France, Germany, England, Italy and Mexico.

The department maintains working relations with specialized institutes and research centers. For example, A.V. Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis (RAS), the Institute of Physical Chemistry (RAS), Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry (RAS), Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, D.I. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, NGO "Technology", NGO "Typhoon", University of Utah (USA).

At the department there are scientific research clubs "Nanochemist" and "In the World of Modern Catalysis", where students conduct research and experiments and talk about their achievements during seminars.

Department of General Chemistry

Foundation date: 1981.

At the Department of General Chemistry there is a scientific seminar, where the results of research on the chemistry of coordination compounds are discussed.

The main research directions of the department:

  • complex compounds of metals with derivatives of 3,3-dimethyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (led by Doctor of Chemistry V.V. Davydov);
  • complex compounds of metals with polyoxo-compounds on the basis of aromatic and heteroaromatic cycles (led by Doctor of Chemistry Kovalchukova O.V.);
  • complex compounds of metals with derivatives of phenanthrenhinone (led by PhD in Chemistry Linko R.V.);
  • the use of quantum chemical calculations for the study of organic molecules and coordination compounds (led by PhD in Chemistry Ryabov M.A.);
  • coordination chemistry of azo and hydrazo compounds (led by PhD in Chemistry Strashnova S.B.);
  • complex compounds of metals with crown ethers (led by PhD in Chemistry Kolyadina N.M.);
  • the study of the interaction of copper, iron, molybdenum and manganese oxide compounds with solvents of different chemical nature (led by PhD in Chemistry Nevskaya E.Yu.).

Postgraduate students perform research work in the laboratories of the department, take part in the science club "Coordination chemistry of d-metals with polyfunctional ligands" (led by Ph.D. in Chemistry, Associate Professor Ryabov M.A.).

Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Foundation date: 1961

Head of the Department – Doctor of Education, Assistant Professor Mekeko Natalia Mikhailovna.

The Department of Foreign Languages implements the educational programme "Translator" for bachelors, master and postgraduate students of all fields of study of the faculty. The programme includes advanced learning of English, French and German languages and mastery of professional translation skills.

The department implements short-term training programmes for training specialists with due account for the main professional activity: "Foreign Language. Academic Skills ", "Foreign Language. Language for Special Purposes". Everyone interested has the opportunity to master the programme of professional language training for passing international examinations FCE (English), DAF (German), DELF (French) and learning a foreign language for business communication.

Annually the department holds student conferences in foreign languages. Such experience prepares future graduates for intercultural communication in the professional sphere. The department also holds an international conference among teachers, dedicated to improving teaching methods and introducing new technologies into the educational process.

The department cooperates with colleagues from the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University (Belarus), Turan University (Kazakhstan).

Faculty Description

The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences is one of the oldest faculties of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. The faculty was founded in 1961.

The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences of RUDN University is a "good school of life" (V.M. Filippov, Rector of RUDN University), where students’ special systemic thinking is formed along with scientific knowledge. This combination allows graduates of this faculty to make a career in science, to be successful in business, entrepreneurship, politics, in the field of information technologies.

The faculty consists of 7 departments, 2 scientific and 2 scientific-educational institutes: S.M. Nikol’skii Mathematical Institute and Research Institute of Physics & Technology (RIPT). At the faculty there are 4 thesis councils for defending PhD and doctoral theses.

The faculty trains more than 1,500 students and postgraduate students in 8 field of study:

The faculty conducts training both in Russian and in English. In particular, there are three master's programmes in English: "Theoretical and Mathematical Physics" (Research Institute of Physics & Technology), "Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds" (Department of Organic Chemistry), "Functional Methods in Differential Equations and Interdisciplinary Researches" (S.M. Nikol’skii Mathematical Institute).

Master's programmes in Chemistry and Fundamental Informatics and Information Technologies have been internationally accredited by the Spanish agency DEVA-AAC, which is part of the European Quality Assurance Register (EQAR).

The faculty implements joint educational programmes with foreign universities. The programme "Pharmaceutical Analysis in the Production and Quality Control of Medicines" is implemented jointly with the Yerevan State University, the exchange education programme – jointly with the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

In 40 laboratories of the faculty, students solve differential equations, study mathematical and computer modeling, function spaces, IT systems and networks, develop the theory of extremum problems and optimal control. Students study the problems of artificial intelligence, create new materials and biologically active substances, energy-saving technologies and environmentally friendly energy, conduct research in the field of electromagnetic radiation and the application of information technologies in natural sciences.

Students of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences are united in science clubs and teams, participate in scientific and professional competitions and olympiads, where they present their results of research and development. Students have the opportunity to participate in scholarship programs of foreign organizations, in particular, DAAD (Germany), N+I (France) and ERASMUS (EEU).

At the faculty great importance is attached to internships. Students undertake internships at the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute", A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INEOS RAS), A.V. Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the international airport "Domodedovo".

Partners of the faculty in the field of education and science: University Saskatchewan (Canada), Gumilev ENU (Kazakhstan), G.V. Leibniz Hannover University (Germany), University of Porto (Portugal), Tampere University of Technology (Finland), Free University of Berlin, Heidelberg University (Germany), Chemistry Institute of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Institute of Experimental Physics (Slovakia).

Cooperation with foreign universities is an opportunity for students to study upon academic exchange programmes and conduct joint scientific research with foreign colleagues.

Science at the faculty is a special priority. Two scientific and two academic institutions have been established to conduct research in breakthrough areas of science:

  • Joint Research Institute of Chemistry. The task set before the scientists of the Institute is to develop methods for obtaining natural compounds and their analogues to create new biologically active substances that will help solve the problems of many diseases of mankind.
  • Nikol'skii Mathematical Institute. The Institute conducts interdisciplinary research, based on sections of functional analysis and differential equations with applications to variational problems, optimal control, nonlinear problems of mathematical physics and modeling.
  • Applied Mathematics & Communications Technology Institute. The Institute was established to solve practical problems in the field of Internet of things, fifth generation wireless networks (5G) and their applications. In the Institute's laboratories, joint research is conducted by mathematicians and engineers from Russia, the USA, Switzerland, Finland and the Czech Republic.
  • Research Institute of Physics & Technology. The Institute conducts research in the field of plasma dynamics, wave and radiative processes, nano- and plasma technologies. The research results are aimed at the development and creation of innovative energy sources.
