RUDN scientists have traced the changes that have occurred in the chernozems of the Belgorod region over the past 35 years. During soil degradation, they often change color, and this allowed specialists to assess their condition from satellite images. This method will help to quickly identify the deterioration of the soil and regulate its use to increase the efficiency of cultivation.

RUDN scientists found out that the urbanization favorably affects stocks of organic carbon in soils of northern latitudes whereas in the southern leads to exhaustion of this important soil component. Research conducted on the example of Murmansk and Rostov-on-Don — the large Russian cities from different climatic zones. The obtained data will help to correctly plan development the cities in order to avoid exhaustion of local soils.

RUDN University engineers have shown that theoretical calculations traditionally used to describe the compression of metal work pieces, do not consider an important property of materials. Scientists have proposed a new approach that considered the missing property and showed that the result in this case changes by 15-20%.

Biologists have found that sorption-biological treatment is the most effective method to clean northern soils contaminated with petroleum products. To do this, activated carbon and peat are introduced into the soil, which bind toxic petroleum hydrocarbons and make them available for decomposition by microorganisms. The proposed method of bioremediation will help to improve the ecological state of soils in areas of oil production and spills.

RUDN University scientists conducted a survey among residents of Moscow and found out the reasons why they have pets. The results proved that pets should be included in the classification of ecosystem services. This will help to consider the interests of pet owners in urban planning and management.

Scientists from the Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology RAS, RUDN University, St. Petersburg State University and the Tyumen Scientific Centre SB RAS studied the microbial communities from several lakes of the Yamal Peninsula. It turned out that methanotrophs (bacteria that use methane as a source of energy) consume methane more actively in the deep mature lakes of the peninsula than in small thermokarst lakes. In this regard, methane emissions into the atmosphere from the surface of deep lakes are low, and only small (relatively younger thermokarst lakes with constitutional ground ice) can make a significant contribution to methane emissions in the north of Western Siberia. Thus, bacteria perform an important function for the climate balance — they reduce the emission of methane into the atmosphere.

Lead is one of the most common heavy metals that pollute the environment. The level of lead pollution is constantly growing because of its use in the production of batteries, paints, and fuel. Basically, lead enters the environment through the wastewater of production facilities. From there, it affects the entire ecosystem. One of the ways to purify water from lead is bioremediation. Toxic metal is absorbed by microorganisms that become resistant to it, for example, through increased accumulation of lipids. RUDN University chemist together with colleagues investigated the possibility of using microalgae Chlorella Sorokiniana for bioremediation. Chemists have also shown that the protective mechanisms of algae not only reduce the level of pollution, but also increase the potential of using microorganisms as biofuels.

RUDN economists have found out how consumers relate to eco-labeling in Russia. It turned out thattheydo not pay attention to eco-labels, and manufacturers mislead them,so in Russia eco-labeling does not yet contribute to the sustainable developmentof the economy. RUDN University mathematician proposed an artificial neural network for solving the queuing theory problems that arise, for example, in computing systems or business processes. Together with classical methods, it will help calculate the optimal queue length, at which it is necessary to use a slower device to minimize the functions of average losses even with a large system load. The results are published in Mathematics.
