Profession
Otolaryngologists are engaged in the study, diagnosis, research and treatment of various disorders of the ears, throat and nose. The profession covers 3 complex systems of the human body, so it requires special attention and deep knowledge from specialists. ENT departments are available in all hospitals, and doctors are also part of the staff of clinics. This is one of the most complex and interesting sections of surgery, which requires not only deep knowledge, but also the ability to think in an unusual way.
Treatment of diseases of the ear, throat and nose was practiced in ancient times. We can draw conclusions from archaeological excavations that even the removal of tonsils and polyps was very common. When examining the grave of Pharaoh Ramses II, scientists found documents that are very similar to recipes for preparing remedies used to treat ears. The first holding of tracheotomy is attributed to Hippocrates, and intubation – Avicenna. In Russia, otorhinolaryngology began to exist as an independent discipline in 1893 – it was introduced at the Military medical Academy of St. Petersburg. Already in 1922, its study became mandatory in all faculties of higher medical institutions. Nowadays, the development of the discipline largely depends on technical progress and scientific activities of specialists.
Educational Process
The program is implemented using various forms of training, including advanced electronic educational technologies, the ability to develop practical skills in a multidisciplinary hospital under the guidance of experienced doctors. The development of modern practical skills is supplemented by a course of simulation education.
Practice
The student gets skills in performing operations for abscesses in the ears or nose, performing maxillary sinus punctures, nasal washing, removing hematoma, sulfur plugs from the ears, and polyps. The training is practically oriented and is aimed at forming systematic knowledge and professional competencies that allow performing therapeutic activities.
Career
ENT doctors work in clinics, hospitals, specialized clinics and research centers. Problems with ENT organs are so common that doctors of this profile are in demand in private clinics. Narrow specialists (surdologist, phoniatrist, etc.) work in specialized offices, centers and clinics.
