In 2020, the Moscow City Government will begin to monitor urban trees using devices created by RUDN scientists. This was announced by the head of Moscow Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection Anton Kulbachevsky during the 20th anniversary meeting of the Panel of the Department. The event was held on March 2, 2020. Elvira Dovletyarova, head of the Department of Landscape Design and Sustainable Ecosystems of the Agrarian and Technological Institute of RUDN University took the floor as a visiting expert.

A chemist at RUDN University has invented a new method for the synthesis of a large group of complex poly-heterocyclic organic compounds, which draw interest as possible future medications. The researcher turned to a two-step reaction, in which he used affordable and cheap organic reagents and catalysts based on gold, which allowed him to synthesize as many as 28 new molecules. This approach will significantly expand the libraries of biologically active substances. The work was published in Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry.

RUDN University soil scientists visualized for the first time the activity of the phosphatase enzyme in the soil surrounding the roots of a plant by simultaneously using zymography and a fibre optic acidity sensor. This helped them to see how the plants “adjust” their root system to the environment. The study was published in the journal Soil Biology and Biochemistry.

Within the framework of a joint project with the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and the Russian Academy of Sciences, a station for monitoring of the local state of the troposphere was put into service at the Research Institute of Physics and Technology (RUDN University). Particular attention will be paid to the ozone level in the surface atmospheric stratum, because ozone is positioned as one of the most dangerous air pollutants.

RUDN University chemists first obtained polymer nanoparticles from chitosan derivatives with antibacterial activity at the level of modern antibiotics. Chitosan is a polyaminosaccharide that is obtained from chitin and is actively used as a biological additive and cosmetic agent, but the antibacterial properties of chitosan are very weak, mainly due to its low solubility in water.

A RUDN University chemist has created a catalyst for wastewater treatment that removes paracetamol – one of the most commonly prescribed antipyretics. This medicine is excreted from the body through the kidneys and enters the sewage, where it does not decompose and can pose a threat to people and the environment. The chemist managed to create a catalyst based on silver sulfide, zinc oxide and graphene oxide, thanks to which paracetamol decomposes in light. The work is published in the journal Separation and Purification Technology.

Bioengineers from RUDN University have created magnetic nanocontainers for ‘smart’ drug delivery in the body. Thanks to them, the active substance gets only to certain organs or tissues, which reduces the risk of side effects. In an experiment on mice, it was shown that nanocontainers are non-toxic and not dangerous. The results of the study are published in the journal Polymers.

Soil scientists from RUDN University found that the most favorable conditions for microorganisms are created in soil pores with a size of 60 to 180 micrometers. To visualize the relationship between the enzymes that produce soil microorganisms and pore size, the researchers created a three-dimensional map of soil structure. To do this, they used soil 2D zymography and X-ray computed tomography (3D). The article is published in the leading soil science journal Soil Biology and Biochemistry.
