What is the role of strategic planning in modern universities?

President of IREG Observatory Jan Sadlak gave a lecture on strategic planning in modern universities in RUDN.

During his lecture, the President of the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence Jan Sadlak raised issues of usage of strategic planning in modern universities. He noted that strategic planning is one of the unique ways to transform wishful thinking into reality. It helps both predict probable risks and seek new opportunities minimizing influence of crisis situations.

Good strategic planning allows universities to adapt to numerous changes, distribute limited financial, human and other resources, adopt an efficient policy and form goals.

Professor Sadlak noted a few reasons why universities can’t stand idly:

  • high rate of social, cultural, technological changes;
  • close relationship of organizations minimal interacted before: international and local, State and private, commercial and public, educational and financial.

The lecture included presentation of main stages and key decisions of strategic planning illustrated by the cases of Oxford and other universities
