The field of study «Legal Studies» is implemented under bachelor, master’s and postgraduate programmes at the Institute of Law.
Bachelor's degree:
General Studies
Law students in General Studies study civil law, entrepreneurial law, civil procedure, arbitral proceeding, theory and history of law and state, constitutional law and other disciplines. Starting from the second year, students put theory into practice in the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Federation Council of the Russian Federation, General Prosecutor’s Office, Supreme and Constitutional Courts, Arbitration Court of the Independent Arbitration Chamber of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry, etc.
International Law
Law students in International Law study history of international diplomacy, intergovernmental territorial disputes, World Trade Organization law, European Union law, practice of law in the European Court of Human Rights, international business law, international public law. Two foreign languages are compulsory under the programme.
Under the master’s programmes in Legal Studies students choose the area of specialization. The Institute offers programmes in Russian, English and programmes implemented jointly with international higher education institutions.

Master’s students study all possible areas of international law including business law and humanitarian, space and environmental, air and maritime, diplomatic and consular, medical and penal law, law of the European Union and international organizations. Students acquire practical skills during their internships and trainings in the Ministries of the Russian Federation, offices of international organizations, bar associations. Graduates in law are ready to work both in private legal practices and public defender’s offices and ministries and government agencies, embassies and consulates, large law firms and international organizations. As master’s students have teaching internship during their studies they can choose teaching and research career.
Public Procurement and Its Legal Regulation
The main part of the programme is a practical unit of disciplines which involve in-depth study of certain practical areas of legal regulation of economic activities, in particular, interaction of businesses and public and municipal institutions. Students learn to plan procurement of goods, works, services; select suppliers (contractors, providers); conclude civil law contracts which provide for goods delivery; monitor compliance with the legislation of the Russian Federation and other regulatory legal acts on contract system in procurement of goods, works, services, etc. Students complete their internship in the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service, departments and offices of economic, tax and credit and financial policy of the Government of the Russian Federation.
Lawyer in Financial Activities
Financial activities of public and commercial institutions are things that master’s students focus on during their studies. On the one hand, students master the skills of legal counselling of oversight functions and powers in financial sphere which a state implements. On the other hand, students learn to create conditions so that all entities under control and oversight meet financial discipline requirements. This concerns budgetary, tax activities, banking, insurance activities, foreign exchange regulation and control. Future lawyers are trained to solve problems of raising effectiveness of financial activities of a state, local authorities, financial and operating activities of organizations, stimulating the quality of public and commercial administration in Russia.
Civil Process, Arbitration Process
Civil process, international commercial arbitration, mediation, serving as an intermediary, negotiations are the things that master’s students study. They master a full set of modern forms and ways of effective dispute resolution. The specialized disciplines include Arbitration Process, Ways of Court Appeals against Acts, Execution of Judgements of Courts of Arbitration and General Jurisdiction, International Commercial Arbitration. Students learn to use modern computer technologies in civil and arbitration proceedings, for example to submit a request online via My Arbitrator system. Graduates are specialists able to handle civil cases in public courts and arbitration courts in Russia and foreign countries, appeal against judgements and arbitral decisions, execute judgements and arbitral decisions.
Civil Law, Domestic Relations Law, Business Law, International Private Law
The programme is intensive and diverse. Students get acquainted with the developments in law within the framework of the course in Actual Issues of Civil Substantive and Procedural Law. Under the course in Theory of Civil Law they learn to deal with draft laws and interpret them from the point of view of system legal analysis. The course in Legal Regulation of EU Turnover expands the boundaries of comprehending legal regulation. Moreover, students study insurance, contract, corporate, patent law, M&A deals. The programme also includes courses devoted to regulation of transborder relations, corporate relations, protection of individual rights, dispute resolution. Students can choose them depending on their interests.
Corporate Lawyer
All kinds of legal practice are open for graduates of this specialization: in consulting and public authorities, banks and bar associations, private business and large holdings. Students study topical issues of civil substantive and procedural law, legal regulation of credit and settlement and turnover, corporate, insurance contract, patent law, M&A deals. Master’s students acquire knowledge and skills taking into account the latest developments in law.
Legal Support of Self-Governing Authorities
Russian local administration is an actively developing sphere. Today there are over 22 thousand municipalities and even more municipal enterprises in Russia. All of them need professional lawyers. This ensures bright prospects for our graduates.
During their studies master’s students have the following disciplines - Topical Issues of Municipal Law, Legal Regulation of Local Authorities’ Activities, Municipal Service, Legal Status of a Municipal Deputy. The knowledge students acquire are reinforced during internships in public authorities, e.g. Tverskoy Municipality of Moscow, Election Commission of the Moscow region, Federation Council Committee on Constitution Legislation and State Construction.

Over 200 thousand non-profit organizations operate in Russia today. Their number is increasing due to the grant support of the President of the Russian Federation. Legal Regulation of Natural Resource, Land, Property Relations and Urban Development

Now more than ever modern world needs specialists capable of regulating public relations which arise when man interacts with nature. Striving to become experts in this field, students study legal aspects of land and property relations, civil, land and property law. They learn to apply their knowledge in practice, complete their internships in law departments of large industrial enterprises (oil and gas extraction, energy, agrarian, wood processing enterprises), development corporations, public authorities dealing with urban development, land and property relations and nature management.

Graduates of this field of study can work as an investigating officer, investigator, forensic expert, judge, prosecutor, lawyer, counsel, defender of rights and legitimate interests of natural and legal persons. The disciplines taught to master’s students include topical issues of penal law and procedure, problems of crime qualification, special psychophysical research with polygraphs to ensure security of an organization and business, legal status of an affected person in a criminal proceeding, crimes against person, personal professional safety in lawyer’s activities, criminalistic foundations of corporate veil, penal and legal protection of minors, etc.
Constitution Law and Constitution Proceedings
Graduates of this programme are specialists who are ready for law-making, legal, law-enforcement, expert and consulting activities. In other words, they can prepare a regulatory legal act, make decision and make up a legal document on its basis, insure public order, consult on legal matters, perform an expert examination of documents.
Forensic Expert Activities in Law Enforcement
This field of study is an educational project developed by the RUDN University Institute of Law jointly with the Russian Federal Centre of Forensic Examination (head forensic expert institution of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation). Students have access to invaluable knowledge and skills in forensic expert activities: crime scene investigation and evidence assessment using different methods, handwriting and document examination, forensic examination of matters, substances and products. Classes include mostly practical disciplines where students master specific skills of forensic expert activities. Master’s graduates are real specialists and experts with broad-based legal knowledge, judicial thinking and striving for further professional development.
Administrative Law, Administrative Proceedings
Protection of interests in court, treatment of administrative complaints, working with cases of administrative offences and other categories of cases are a serious task. It requires good preparation. During their studies law students acquire a wealth of knowledge and skills which are sufficient for working in court and prosecutor’s office, Investigation Committee and public authorities, legal departments. Moreover, graduates can engage in academic activities, seek a status of a lawyer and even a judge providing they have a bachelor’s degree.
Theory and History of Law and State. Comparative Legal Studies

Graduates are, first of all, scholars and researchers in the field of law. Their prior professional aim is to develop legal solutions for regulating social issues and improving public mechanism jointly with their colleagues. The skills graduates master allow them to build their future career as specialists and practitioners in legal departments of organizations, enterprises, public and municipal authorities.
International Protection of Human Rights
Programme in Russian / Programme in English / Jointly with Université Grenoble Alpes (France)
This programme is the first master’s programme in human rights protection in Russia which is supported by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It includes the disciplines developed especially for this programme, i.e. protection of human rights in the UN system, human rights promotion and protection, international legal regulation of migration, ensuring rights under the EU law, rights protection mechanisms, discrimination and gender issues, rights of indigenous peoples and minorities, etc. Master’s students get acquainted with the practical aspect of their profession during internships and trainings in the Offices of the UN, the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
LLM International Private Law
Programme in English
Specialists in international private law solve matters complicated by a foreign element. A lot of interesting cases are to be settled by law graduates such as legal status of foreign citizens and legal persons in the Russian Federation and Russian citizens and legal persons abroad, rights of property, obligation, international purchase and sale, damages in tort, intellectual property, domestic relations, inheritance, labour law, consideration of disputes with international participants in court and International Commercial Arbitration.
Legal Regulation of Blockchain Technology
Jointly with Kutafin Moscow State Law University
While maintaining a fundamental approach, higher education is to take challenges of time into consideration. The specialization in Blockchain technology (technology which cryptocurrencies are built on) is in line with modern trends in legal regulation. Students master knowledge and experience of introducing Blockchain technology into public administration and economy. The programme includes legal regulation of cryptocurrencies, strategies of legal fixation and support of technical standards, international and national policy.
